It’s so strange to me that some horses can go their entire lives without ever really being loved by a human. Admired maybe. Used, bought, sold, ridden, managed… but not truly loved for who they are. You can feel it in so many sale ads. “2020 model.” “Kick ride.” “No brakes.” Like they’re vehicles instead of living beings with personalities, preferences, fears, and little quirks that make them them. It’s rare to see someone say: “his favorite treat is bananas,” or “she loves being bathed,” or “he follows me around like a dog.” So much of a horse’s value becomes tied to what they can produce, tolerate, or survive. And when horses arrive here — even ones in far better condition than Steve — I always catch myself wondering the same thing: did anyone ever tell you they loved you? Project Steve is our commitment to making sure this little horse knows the answer to that question for the rest of his life. Steve is facing extensive diagnostics, surgery, rehabilitation, and lifelong specialty care, and we cannot do it alone. Here's what's coming up in Recreation & Parks: 🗓️ In observance of Memorial Day, Recreation & Parks administrative offices and recreation centers will be closed on Monday, May 25. All locations will resume normal operating hours on Tuesday, May 26. This closure does not affect pools, Historic Bethabara Park, the golf courses, or Salem Lake. 🗓️ Kimberley Park, Long Creek, Parkland, Polo, and Reynolds Park Pools will open for the season on Saturday, May 30 at noon. All pools will continue opening daily. Mineral Springs Pool will open on Monday, June 8. Check back on our social media pages on Monday, May 25 to see the pool hours for this season. 🗓️ It is not too late to register for Historic Bethabara’s Young Apprentice Program on June 1-5! Each day, participants will get to work with a different skilled tradesperson to learn about an 18th-century trade before making something to take home with them.
