Within a week of hitchhiking south with a borrowed camera, he was in a jail cell across from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He was 20 years old. Those photographs are now hanging in Winston-Salem. 📷 Flash Point: The Civil Rights Photography of Danny Lyon is on view at Reynolda House Museum of American Art, 2250 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC — September 17, 2026 through January 3, 2027, in the Mary and Charlie Babcock Wing Gallery. 🎓 Free for college students with a valid student ID. Every day it’s open. Bring your ID to the desk. In 1962, Danny Lyon was a University of Chicago student with a borrowed camera and a historian’s instincts. He went on to become the official photographer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee — and what got him that access wasn’t a press pass. It was that he was in it. He marched when the students marched and slept where they slept. His images ran on SNCC posters and pamphlets and in newspapers across the country. In his words, his camera could be a sword for justice. Flash Point debuts more than 50 photographs promised to Wake Forest University by James and Wendy Agah — the largest single gift of photographs in the university’s history. The exhibition is co-curated by Phil Archer, Betsy Main Babcock Deputy Director for Reynolda, and Ashley Givens, adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Art at Wake Forest University.
